Jurgen Klopp's first Liverpool game assessed by Jamie Carragher

Speaking on Monday Night Football, he said: "I liked what I saw. Very rarely do you see a manager stamp his authority on a team from day one, but that's what he did. "Over the week since he's had the job, we've been reading about what he is like as a manager - pressing, how much distance they are going to cover. chaussuredefoot2015

"Transition pressing was a massive thing for Klopp at Borussia Dortmund and it looks like it's going to be a really big thing for this Liverpool team. One thing Klopp likes is for four or five players to get around the opposition player on the ball. He sees transition as a great opportunity to score a goal. The Monday Night Football panel assess the impact managers have in their first Premier League game recently The Monday Night Football panel assess the impact managers have in their first Premier League game recently "As soon as they lose the ball you can see they will keep pressing until they win it back. They're organised and you can see that has been worked on in the first two or three days in training. "What was the difference? Well, these are things you don't see from every team and that is what impressed me in the past from Klopp and we're seeing it from day one. The distance Liverpool covered, it was like they had an extra man on the pitch in terms of pressing and defending. There was a noticeable work-rate increase during Jurgen Klopp's first match as Liverpool manager There was a noticeable work-rate increase during Jurgen Klopp's first match as Liverpool manager "The increase in sprints was the big one, the big thing in football is sports science and how quickly you can get to people and press people with high intensity. This was not a Liverpool team that were under the cosh or had 30 per cent possession, they had more possession than Spurs and they still covered that amount of ground. "What I liked was how compact they were at White Hart Lane, 30 to 35 metres from back to front. He played in the positions they were suited to and still got them to press. The work from those first two to three days on the training ground was clear to see on the pitch."

Joe Cole to Coventry: No need for regret about England’s great hope

Joe Cole's career has taken him to Coventry City at the age of 33 While Coventry celebrate, the sight of Joe Cole in League One is tinged with regret. But why? Adam Bate assesses his career and those extraordinary expectations... The recent documentary honouring Wayne Rooney's journey to becoming England's greatest goalscorer was notable for rekindling images of his early years. The impudence of his strike against Arsenal and the precociousness with which he approached the challenge of his first major tournament for his country. Cole was regarded as one of English football's outstanding talents Cole was regarded as one of English football's outstanding talents Rooney's achievements since then have been vast, but such were the possibilities, even a brilliant career can appear less than remarkable by comparison. So what to make of Joe Cole following the announcement of his one-month loan move from Aston Villa to Coventry City? If the Rooney story warrants a sigh, Cole's tale seems to inspire wailing and sorrow. chaussuremagista

Sweden head into the play-offs despite Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Erkan Zengin giving them a 2-0 win over Moldova in Solna. Meanwhile Austria celebrated the end of a stunning qualifying campaign with their ninth win in 10 games as two goals from Marc Janko and one from Marko Arnautovic saw them ease past Liechtenstein 3-0 in Vienna. Starting the night knowing victory would almost certainly be enough to see them pip rivals Ukraine, Slovakia eased into a 3-0 lead inside the opening half-hour with goals from Marek Hamsik, Adam Nemec and Robert Mak. But minnows Luxembourg hit back with second half goals from Mario Mutsch and Lars Gerson before an injury time effort from Hamsik settled the visitors’ nerves and sealed a 4-2 win. As it happened, Slovakia’s nerves were unfounded as an early Mario Gaspar goal gave Spain a 1-0 win over the Ukrainians in Kiev, sending Mykhaylo Fomenko’s men into the play-offs. Also in Group C, already-eliminated pair Belarus and Macedonia ground out a goalless draw in Borisov. Roy Hodgson’s youthful England line-up wrapped up a 100 per cent record in their qualifying campaign with a straight-forward 3-0 win over Lithuania in Vilnius. In a game marred by crowd trouble, Ross Barkley opened the scoring for England just before the half-hour and a Giedrius Arlauskis own goal had the visitors well in command before half-time.

Blind, father of current United player Daley, says the bust-up had no role in his decision to leave Van Persie out of his starting XI against Kazakhstan.Blind said: "There are sometimes situations in training where players think different. "Then you talk about it. That's what happened and then it's over." Van Persie, who has netted 49 goals in 100 games for his country, left United to join Fenerbahce in July, just a month after Memphis arrived at Old Trafford from PSV Eindhoven.

England's young guns give Roy Hodgson plenty to smile about

Roy Hodgson praised the performances of England's younger players, after their their 3-0 European Qualifier win over Lithuania. Roy Hodgson said the future of English football was bright after his side completed a clean sweep in qualifying for next summer's European Championship in France. England beat Lithuania 3-0 in Vilnius on Monday night to make it 10 wins out of 10 in Group E - the first time they had achieved such a feat in qualifying for the Euros - and Hodgson said he was delighted with his side's display at the LFF Stadium. "We are very pleased with that, of course," the England manager told Sky Sports after the game. "I think the way we approached the game and stamped our authority from the first minute meant we were not often in danger of not winning the game."I thought the team approached the game in exactly the right way. I said to them before the game: 'This is a great opportunity, I believe in you and am excited to see you play.' And I was not let down at all. End of Season discount soccer shoes , please click

"I thought the quality of our football was very, very good and even towards the end we were working very hard to win the ball back when we lost it, despite the fact we were 3-0 up and we could have been even more goals ahead."

England have now joined France (twice), Czech Republic, Spain and Germany in having won every qualifying fixture ahead of a European Championship, although Hodgson played down that fact.Omens are always nice," he said. "But the fact is you only win matches or get good records like this one when you are doing it on the field, so we have some interesting matches coming up now that we are looking forward to against some quality opposition. "And I think that will be a test for us and highlight elements of our play that we have to work even harder on." The biggest positive on the road to Euro 2016, though, as far as Hodgson was concerned was the emergence of so many young and exciting players, all of who will now be challenging for a place at next summer's tournament.

Ramires changed the game for Chelsea' - Saturday Night Football talking point

Jamie Redknapp and Thierry Henry discuss Ramires' game changing performance for Chelsea against Newcastle. Ramires could have won it late on but was denied by Tim Krul, and Redknapp and Henry were full of praise for the midfielder and his impact on the game.Redknapp said: "On 73 minutes the game changed when he brought on Ramires, and I thought it was an inspired substitution. Newcastle were dominating the midfield, they ran all over them, they pressed them, they stopped them playing. "We didn't really see a lot of Matic or Fabregas, but when Ramires came into the game, it was like 'I'll have some of this, this is the sort of game I like,' because he dominated when he came on."

Fernando Torres is a player reborn at Atletico Madrid, says Guillem Balague

Torres now resembles the player he was during his first spell at the Vicente Calderon, says Balague In his weekly column, Sky Sports' Spanish football expert Guillem Balague looks at Fernando Torres's rejuvenation at Atletico Madrid, as well as answering questions on Rafael Benitez and Lionel Messi's penalty-taking abilities… Jackson Martinez and Luciano Vietto were given the opportunity to start again for Atletico Madrid - just as they did against Galatasaray - but they failed to take their opportunity. On the other hand, Fernando Torres, who replaced Martinez at half-time, looks to be rejuvenated back at Atletico. He looks like the Torres of his first spell at the club.

Football League chief Shaun Harvey disagrees with FIFPro proposals

But Harvey feels any change to the system will harm the majority of players and lead to a reduction of wages. Harvey also believes it will affect the development of young players as clubs abandon their youth systems and academies with no prospect of selling on players for profit. Harvey said: "Previous legal interventions on the transfer system at a European level, such as the Bosman ruling, have only served to significantly increase the wages paid to players at all levels of the game. "Clubs now have to manage their players' registrations in a completely different way by making efforts to retain their services or transfer them before they are able to move for free when their contracts expire. "Either way, the outcome is usually an increase in salary for players from their existing club or the club they join. "Most Football League clubs lose money and have to make up any deficit through shareholding funding and player transfers. "If FIFPro were to achieve their aim of abolishing the transfer system altogether it would only increase the financial burden on club owners with the only way to reduce that burden being to pay players less as they are comfortably the biggest cost faced by clubs. "Across the Football League, 97% of turnover is currently being spent in this area with Championship clubs spending more on player wages than they earn in income.

Mark Hughes frustrated with team and referee after Leicester draw

Hughes told Sky Sports: "We are frustrated. We put ourselves in a winning position with the level of performance we produced in the first half and we were good value. "Unfortunately, we conceded in the first five minutes of the half a penalty. At 2-1, you are wary of a change of momentum and, credit to Leicester, they got their tails up and had a go in the second half. "There are a lot of positives, but the negative is that we still need that first win. There were signs today that we are getting closer, but we need that 90-minute performance." Bojan had given Stoke a 13th-minute lead Bojan had given Stoke a 13th-minute lead Hughes was angry at referee Andre Marriner for both Leicester goals. He felt the penalty that Mahrez converted was wrongly awarded and then thought Stoke should have had a free-kick in the moments leading up to the equaliser. He added: "It looked like Marko Arnautovic had just clipped the lad's heel. It looked like it was outside, but even so, there was a likelihood that the penalty would have been given because the officials didn't get too much right today, to be perfectly honest.

Man City must find aggression after West Ham loss - Pellegrini

But they missed the chance to move six points clear at the top of the Premier League table, slipping to their first top-flight defeat in 12 matches. Hammers loanee Victor Moses drilled in a low 20-yard shot and Diafra Sakho hooked in from six yards, before City's record signing Kevin De Bruyne fired in to halve the deficit. "I'm frustrated as they were three very important points at home," added Pellegrini. "They won their two away games before this game against Arsenal and Liverpool so I knew it would not be easy but we conceded two easy goals and that allowed them to be in front. "We never believed we had won the title after just five games - we just always focus on the next game." Winning away run is a dream - Bilic West Ham's perfect Premier League away record after beating Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City is a dream, admits Hammers manager Slaven Bilic. "It is a surprise to us as well that we have beaten Liverpool, Arsenal and Man City," said the 47-year-old Croatian. "Nine points from the first three away games sounds like a dream, not a plan. Bilic hails 'great night' for West Ham Former West Ham defender Bilic, who replaced Sam Allardyce in the summer, guided his team to a 2-0 win at Arsenal on the opening weekend, then to a 3-0 success at Liverpool. But they recorded arguably the biggest shock by beating a City team which had scored 11 goals, conceding none, in their opening five matches. City dominated the game, controlling 72% of possession and attempting 27 shots at goal, but were unable to find a way past the Hammers who are now three points behind them in second place. "We deserved to win," said Bilic. "City played much better in the second half and it was almost like The Alamo. "But I have told my players to be proud, we deserved it, and we kept the ball when they let us.

Champions League: Celtic weakness cruelly exposed in defeat

In the minutes after Celtic's lame exit from the Champions League, the mixed zone at the Swedbank Stadium was like a hospital ward for damaged footballers. The visiting team trooped in with their pride hurting not just because of what their driven opponents from Malmo had just done to them but by what their own manager had said about them. When Ronny Deila accused his team of being "scared" and "frightened" on the night, it was as firm a kick to their collective solar plexus as anything the Swedes visited upon them. By levelling an accusation of timidity at his players, Deila was calling into question all sorts of things - principally their character. It was a searing comment, the most serious accusation he could have made. And he was correct. Celtic failed dismally to front-up. Their go-to players were routed. Virgil van Dijk, Charlie Mulgrew, Scott Brown and Stefan Johansen were all badly beaten in their head-to-heads. Celtic's leaders were cowed. True, they were the victims of a miscarriage of justice when Nir Bitton's goal was disallowed just before the break, but later on, nobody from the Celtic camp sought refuge in a hard luck story. Fair play to them for that. Refusing to cling to that life raft was the best part of their night. Goal or no goal, they knew they weren't good enough. Bakary Sako to Crystal Palace: What will the former Wolves winger offer?

We profile Crystal Palace winger Bakary Sako as he awaits his Premier League debut. When Bakary Sako left St Etienne in 2012 it was something of a surprise that he ended up in the Championship with Wolves rather than the Premier League. After a trip to League One and back, the exciting winger will now finally get his top-flight chance with Crystal Palace. End of Season discount soccer shoes , please click

In his final season in France, Sako was one of only four players to rank among the top 10 for most shots and dribbles. The others were Eden Hazard, Javier Pastore and Nene. He wasn’t always that efficient but, as Wolves boss Kenny Jackett put it, “you need match winners”.

Southampton star Dusan Tadic says fitness key to his season

Southampton midfielder Dusan Tadic wants to replicate his early success from last season but the Serb admits he has to remain injury-free. Tadic, who went under the knife during the summer, joined the club last summer from FC Twente and got off to a flying start, scoring four goals and providing nine assists in 25 Premier League startsBut a groin problem worsened which lead to a premature end to his season.End of Season discount soccer shoes , please click

Glory For Gunners And Goals For Theo

Manchester United v Tottenham You know that moment when you know that tomorrow will be the day of days and you can't fall asleep because you are permanently aroused? We are in that moment. It's only Start of the New Football Season Eve ya f*cking dancers!!!! Yes, we've had the Ashes and Wimbledon but nothing compares to watching the Beautiful Game with a few bets on. ManYoo get us under way and they look a very good thing at 4/6 to beat a Spurs side who missed their flight back to Blighty and have been spending most of this week slinking around in Germany. Their prep for the big kick-off (which has been absolutely shambolic by the way) has to have been hampered by their involvement in Munich and you have to question whether finishing third in the Audi Cup was worth all the hassle? The Red Devils have bought big but for me are a striker light at least in terms of competing for the title. What they have however should be plenty good enough to see off Tottenham. Betting: Manchester United to win and both teams to score at 3/1 (Ladbrokes) End of Season discount soccer shoes , please click

Hibernian insist Scott Allan will not be sold to Rangers

Allan was left out of the starting team because of the interest in his future, but did come off the bench as Hibernian were beaten 6-2 at Ibrox. A statement from Hibernian read: “In the face of continued media interest, Hibernian Football Club can confirm that Scott Allan has today handed in a written transfer request. “This comes on the back of two unwelcome and uninvited approaches from Rangers FC regarding Scott, the first for £175,000 and the second for £225,000. “Hibernian FC has refused both bids because the Club has no wish to transfer a valuable player to strengthen a major rival in the battle to win the Championship and gain promotion to the Premiership. “Hibernian’s position has not changed. The player will not be sold to Rangers.” Allan started his career with Dundee United before moving to West Brom in 2012 and spent time on loan with Portsmouth, Milton Keynes and Birmingham during his time at The Hawthorns. Rangers were interested in signing the player last summer, but he chose to join the Easter Road club instead. Meanwhile, Aberdeen are rumoured to be preparing a £250,000 bid for the player, according to reports in the regional press. Scottish Premiership rivals Dundee United attempted to lure Allan back to Tannadice in January, and may also enter the fray should Hibs decide to sell. United are in the best position financially having sold Ryan Gauld to Sporting Lisbon, Andrew Robertson to Hull City, and Stuart Armstrong, Gary Mackay-Steven and Nadir Ciftci, all to Celtic in the last year.

F365's Top Ten Players Who Forced Moves

As soon as it became clear that Cesc Fabregas was destined to become one of Europe's finest midfielders, Arsenal must have feared that the Catalan would look to return to Barcelona. Fabregas remained quiet through two years of speculation, but his silence said enough; Arsene Wenger eked another year out of his captain after rejecting an offer from Barca in June 2010, but the Spaniards' persistence paid off in August 2011. "We have lost a world-class player," said Wenger. "We are sad about it because we tried to keep him." Fabregas was so keen to go, he agreed to sacrifice €1million a year from his salary that would be paid to the Gunners. Arsenal fans - partly out of weariness - accepted Fabregas's exit, though his return to London with Chelsea three years later left a much more bitter taste. 9. Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United) Ronaldo was clearly keen to leave United for Real Madrid in 2008 after they had won the Premier League and Champions League. Job done. Let's move on. His approach was certainly more subtle than the likes of Raheem Sterling, but going on the record to agree with Sepp Blatter's comments that not being allowed to move was similar to "modern slavery" certainly won't have helped his situation. Sir Alex Ferguson certainly didn't want to sell his prized asset, especially to Real Madrid, who United reported to FIFA over their pursuit of Ronaldo, with Ferguson famously remarking: "Do you think I would enter into a contract with that mob? Absolutely no chance. I would not sell them a virus." That comment came after Ferguson and Ronaldo had reached an understanding that the Portuguese could leave, but only after he gave United one more season. His form didn't quite match his heroics of the previous campaign, but he still helped United win their third consecutive title before he left for Madrid with Ferguson's blessing.

Manchester United's Bastian Schweinsteiger says his injury woes are behind him

New Manchester United signing Bastian Schweinsteiger has insisted there should be no concerns over his fitness, despite injuries limiting his appearances for Bayern Munich last season. The Germany captain completed his move to Old Trafford from Bayern Munich on Monday for a fee of around £14.5million along with Morgan Schneiderlin, who joined the side from Southampton. Schweinsteiger, 30, suffered with injuries after helping his country to World Cup glory in Brazil last summer and was restricted to just 15 Bundesliga starts last term. But then I had great weeks and months with Bayern, I was not injured and I am feeling great now at the moment. "Everything is fine and I'm looking forward to giving my best for Manchester United and I'm really happy to be here." Schweinsteiger, who won eight Bundesliga titles with Bayern as well as the Champions League, has played under Louis van Gaal before at the German giants, but said his former boss wasn't the only reason he chose to head to Manchester. He insisted the traditions of United and his previous experiences of playing at Old Trafford were key in his decision. "Manchester United is a big club with a lot of tradition and it's exactly what I wanted," he added. "We have the same philosophy.

Steven Gerrard says he has plenty to prove at LA Galaxy

Steven Gerrard has told Sky Sports News HQ that he has not joined LA Galaxy for an easy life and says he still has plenty to prove on the pitch. In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports News HQ, the former Liverpool and England captain admitted he is enjoying not being recognised in public as he settles into life in California. It's difficult to have a meal or a coffee or do anything with the girls because you get a lot of attention. "That's what you want when you first become a footballer but it is nice at this stage of my career to have a bit of a life off the pitch.Up until November/December last year when I made the announcement that I thought I needed a new challenge and when LA Galaxy came in they were very aggressive to get my signature and to get me to sign. I thought on and off the pitch they had ticked all the right boxes for me at this stage of my life. "I spoke to Robbie (Keane) and David (Beckham) who have experienced the MLS and they said the level was very good. Having trained for ten days I can say the level is good, players are very fit and very professional. "It is an unbelievable set-up here, the facilities are top drawer. I am expecting some good challenges and some good games.

Raheem Sterling: Steven Gerrard 'disappointed' with Liverpool man

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is disappointed with Raheem Sterling and says the Reds forward is at the "different end of the scale" to "professional" Jordan Henderson. Sterling has missed training through illness and does not want to go on the club's pre-season tour after a £40m bid from Manchester City was rejected. Henderson is set to be named captain. "Jordan's been loyal to the club by signing a new deal and I wish him well," Gerrard, 35, told BBC Sport. Gerrard, speaking to Katie Gornall in a wide-ranging interview, said he could not see Sterling remaining at Anfield. After telling Liverpool he did not want to travel on their forthcoming trip to the Far East, the 20-year-old missed training on Wednesday and Thursday after phoning in sick.

Former Everton player Preki is the shock new favourite for the vacant manager's job at Leicester. And the 52-year-old, who spent two years at Goodison Park in the early 1990s, is now as short as 4/6 with Sky Bet to replace Nigel Pearson at Leicester. Former Charlton and Millwall midfielder Josh Wright discusses life as a free agent during pre-season

Most players know that pre-season is tough. But the majority are consoled by the fact that they're all in it together. The support and camaraderie of team-mates helps individuals through the gruelling six week process, as does the structured training regime laid out by the manager and team of coaches. However for players without clubs, the road to regaining full fitness is far more difficult. A million miles away from the glitz and glamour of Premier League facilities, free agent Josh Wright trains alone without a group of team-mates or coaches to help him through it. With the transfer nearing completion, Darmian has written a letter to Torino fans wishing them farewell and thanking them for their support. Irish FA deny players were paid not to tackle Lionel Messi

Irish football chiefs are taking legal advice over claims that Republic of Ireland players were paid not to tackle Argentina star Lionel Messi during a friendly game in 2010. The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) claims the allegations that players were paid 10,000 US dollars each, made in La Nacion in South America, as "baseless" and have vowed to take the matter further. Argentina faced Ireland in Dublin in August 2010 in a friendly to officially open the new Aviva Stadium and the report suggests it was also in part to help compensate the FAI for the nation's controversial World Cup play-off exit following the Thierry Henry handball in France nine months earlier. An FAI statement said: "The Football Association of Ireland completely refutes the allegations made about the Republic of Ireland v Argentina friendly match in La Nacion as baseless. "The match in question was organised by Kentaro and announced by press release prior to the World Cup play-offs in 2009. We are consulting our legal advisers in relation to the article, and will be taking further steps." The report claims the late Julio Grondona, then president of the Argentina Football Association and senior FIFA vice-president, suggested to FIFA counterpart Sepp Blatter that the Argentinian team should head for Dublin. However, it alleges that Messi's club Barcelona were unhappy with the arrangement and with an insurance quote for the game coming in at five million US dollars, it was decided to adopt the less costly policy of paying the Ireland players to go easy on Messi. The game, in which captain Robbie Keane won his 100th senior international cap, ended 1-0 with Angel di Maria scoring the only goal in front of a crowd of 45,200. The FAI found itself thrust into the limelight earlier this month after chief executive John Delaney confirmed it had received a loan, later written off, of five million euros from FIFA in the wake of the Republic's play-off heartbreak at the Stade de France. Delaney claimed the payment, which was used to offset the cost of redeveloping the old Lansdowne Road stadium, had been made after he and Blatter had entered into a deal under which the Irish governing body would not take legal action over the goal which handed France their ticket to South Africa after referee Martin Hansson and his assistants failed to spot Henry's handball in the build-up. The confidentiality agreement between the two parties, which was released by the FAI in a bid to clarify the situation, described the payment as an "inducement" not to enter into litigation.

Ireland’s World Cup joy: David O’Leary recalls his penalty v Romania

David O'Leary's famous penalty was the high point of the Republic of Ireland's World Cup adventure at Italia '90. Thursday marks 25 years since that glorious day. Here O'Leary talks to Adam Bate about his circuitous journey to Italy and shares his relief that his spot-kick hit the back of the net... "I knew walking up to get the ball I was going to put it to the goalkeeper's left and that's what I made sure I did," says David O'Leary. "There were about 20,000 brilliant Irish supporters behind the goal. They were so still and the eruption of green afterwards when the ball hit the net was absolutely amazing. It's a fantastic memory." He's not alone. O'Leary's winning strike in the penalty shoot-out against Romania in the 1990 World Cup has since been voted as the greatest moment in the history of Irish football. "The nation holds its breath," as commentator George Hamilton famously put it. For O'Leary, at the age of 32, it gave him a day in the World Cup sun that had looked to have passed him by. The Arsenal defender had made his debut for Ireland in 1976 but a fall-out with Jack Charlton saw him miss out on Euro '88 and so Italia '90 would be his first taste of a major international tournament. Despite the country being able to count on the sublime talents of Liam Brady for the best part of two decades, World Cup qualification had always eluded them. "We were in some very tough groups," explains O'Leary. "There was a group once where we finished with 10 points but lost out on goal difference. France went through and there were plenty of other teams who got through to that 1982 World Cup in Spain on eight points and nine points. We were very unlucky and I thought after that the chances of me making it would be very slim indeed.

Southgate flips race debate on press

The Daily Mail posted a picture on its twitter feed on Saturday showing members of England's U21 squad eating a meal at two tables, one shared by black players and the other white. An accompanying caption asked "what does it say about race in Britain today?" England U21 boss Southgate was asked about the picture ahead of Sunday's European Championship game against Sweden and rejected the bizarre claims and suggested the media look at their own industry. He said: "It is quite clear to me in my experiences with England junior teams that there is no issue. It was a picture that was unrepresentative of what goes on in our development teams. "I think anyone who has seen this group of players and staff mix over the last two years, or if they have been around the hotel or the training ground for the last couple of weeks alone, will see the realities of the situation. "I'm looking out at the room (of journalists) and not seeing a very multi-cultural room. Football can improve. "I grew up in a dressing-room (at Crystal Palace) with Chris Powell and John Salako as my team-mates at youth level, and I'm still very close friends with both. Mark Bright and Ian Wright were in the first team, so I don't know anything different. "For me sport crosses religion, race, everything else. I'm well aware of the problems in society, well aware we can all do better, but I find the accusation of a split within teams and football a little bit difficult to stomach actually." The U21s go into the Sweden game on the back of an opening defeat to Portugal, but Southgate stands by his post-match verdict that England were unfortunate to lose. He said: "I think the last day or so has been about getting everyone's emotions ready for this match. When there's a defeat it's easy to feel as if everything's not going your way, so we needed to get everybody together and explain the realities of the performance against Portugal. There was very little in that game." Wolves striker Benik Afobe has replaced the injured Saido Berahino in the squad, and Southgate said: "He has a tremendous enthusiasm to be here. He was ready to cancel his holiday straight away and told me he was keeping his fitness going."

Title Challenge? Arsenal Are Nowhere Near Ready

"We definitely want to push on as a club. With the players we have got there is no reason why we should not be up there challenging for the Premier League". Another day, another handful of Arsenal players tipping a title challenge. Danny Welbeck's rallying cry on Tuesday was quickly follow by that of Tomas Rosicky. "Consistency is key for any title challenge and that is what we have to show through the whole of next season. The potential is there for this side to challenge for the title." Ahh, potential. The buzzword at the Emirates. Only this time it feels a little different. Back-to-back FA Cups have ended the trophy drought, and an excellent finish to the season placed them in third behind champions Chelsea and Manchester City. But why is 'potential' still being discussed? Arsenal can no longer lay claim to the youngest squad in the Premier League - Newcastle, Spurs, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea all outstrip them in that regard. In fact, only Chelsea (3,388) can boast more first-team appearances throughout their whole squad than Arsenal (3,241). 'Potential' is no longer a viable excuse. And it wasn't just Welbeck and Rosicky jumping on the title bandwagon over the past fortnight. Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey and Theo Walcott have all individually backed a title challenge. Predictably, so has Wenger. "We have won the league in the past when we had the potential to do it and that is what we want to do again."

Richards Must Act To Curb The Decline

Micah Richards turns 27 next week, another example of football's innate ability to play tricks on the mind. Where did that fresh-faced defender go? How is he possibly less than five years younger than James Collins? What have we all been doing with our lives? Richards is still England's youngest ever defender, beating Rio Ferdinand to that honour when called up by Steve McClaren in 2006. Quick, strong and skilful, he started six competitive international matches before turning 20. This was Gary Neville for a new generation, England's answer at right-back. A gem had been unearthed in Manchester, via Oldham. How quickly exciting potential becomes wasted opportunity. Richards has transformed from tomorrow's answer to yesterday's man. Following his release by Manchester City, the defender has joined Aston Villa on a four-year deal. While his old side compete for the title, Richards seeks regular football at the club who have finished 16th, 15th, 15th and 17th in the last four Premier League seasons. An England international defender in the prime of his career joining one English club from another should be big news, as the aforementioned Ferdinand can testify. Richards, however, will slip out of a side door at the Etihad, his departure met with neither anguish nor celebration. There is nothing as demeaning as being ignored.

Why Is 27 Years Old A Cut Off For England Fans?

If you have anything for the afternoon Mailbox, mail us at theeditor@football365.com England ARE Good Alex, Leeds - nobody is pretending England are any good. We are good. Generally we sail through qualifying because we're better than most of the teams we're up against. Then a mixture of dreadful psychology and a sharp rise in opposition quality means we look pretty rubbish in most tournaments we get to. This doesn't mean we're awful. But I've yet to see a single England fan saying we're on a par with Spain or whatever. If your definition of 'good' is 'the best' or 'going to win the Euros' then yes, we're not good. But if you line all the international teams up in order from best to worst, which end would you say we'd be nearer to? And we all know how next summer will go: we'll ignore the press b******t for as long as possible, then finally give in to the hype about five minutes before kick off in the quarter finals...before recycling the usual dreary emails about Invest In Grass Roots Now!, Sack Greg Dyke Now!, Winter Break Now!, Premier League Is Rubbish, Pirlo Is So Sexy Lol, etc. etc. etc. Then forget it all in August and spend 10 months finding out who's managed to buy the league this year. And if people do think England are the best...so what? Some people think Jason Manford is funny. Each to their own and all that. Neil Raines England Are Pretty Dull I have to say that I agree with Alex, Leeds. England are pretty dull to watch and really not great (Hodgson's fault as much as anything) but, to go a step further, are they even that likeable? We're captained by an angry Scouser who can't score a meaningful goal in an England shirt to save his life, yet is somehow about to break the record; our most dangerous player is pretty disliked by his own club and, well, just not that dangerous; our most influential player is Jack-the-mouthy-club-rep-from-Magaluf-Wilshere. All in all, a sorry state of affairs. Although I look forward to forgetting all of this, getting really excited pre-Euro 2016 and suffering the same disappointment when we thoroughly underwhelm. Or Kane to do what Rooney did in 2004 (just without the cruel injury), and make me remember why I love England. Alex, THFC (we would've won 2004 if Rooney didn't get injured. What happened to that player?

Arsenal can't handle playing under pressure, says Paul Merson

When the pressure is off and you can’t win the league, football is a completely different game," said Merson, speaking on a special end-of-season Morning View on Sky Sports News HQ.

"When you have to go into a game when you're top of the league or chasing teams down, the pressure is different. "I’m sorry but, when the pressure is on, they don’t perform, and when it’s off they are the best team in the country." Alan Smith - who also played for Arsenal - disagreed with Merson. Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud: The win over Man City was seen as a turning point for Arsenal. Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud: The win over Man City was seen as a turning point for Arsenal. Smith said: "There has been an important shift against the big teams, particularly after the 2-0 win at Manchester City and I think that will set them in good stead in next year." Merson insists Arsene Wenger will have to do some substantial transfer business this summer if the Gunners are to mount a sustained challenge. He added: "I think they need a world class goalkeeper. I can’t remember the goalkeeper ever saving them points this season. I think they need a world-class centre-half, a holding midfielder and a world-class centre-forward. "That is the whole spine of the team. Even with the tight games, like [the 0-0 draw with] Sunderland, it was Sunderland that had the best chances in the game. You rarely see Chelsea have a situation like that."

Liverpool should stick with Brendan Rodgers, says Graeme Souness

Liverpool's American owners should show patience with manager Brendan Rodgers, according to Graeme Souness. Some critics have demanded Rodgers be dismissed following a largely lacklustre season for the Reds after they finished sixth in the Premier League - eight points off the Champions League places. It has been reported Liverpool chairman Tom Werner will fly into Merseyside on Tuesday to oversee the club's end-of-season review and Souness strongly believes the American should not wield the axe. Graeme Souness The Sky Sports football expert, who managed Liverpool between 1991-94, told Sky Sports News HQ: "Rodgers signed a new contract last year after having a great year. "It's been disappointing this year but he’s got a group of young players that he would hope would get better next year and you have to stick with him. "How the Americans view that, I have no idea though." Souness also had strong views on Liverpool and England winger Raheem Sterling, who has been reported to be keen on seeking an Anfield exit.

Juventus need Barcelona off form in Champions League final, says Graeme Souness

Gary Neville supports Women's Sport Week and reveals his first-hand experiences of the difficulties women in sport face. Women's Sport Week is a worthy initiative, and one that I am proud to support. I've seen first-hand the difficulties that women can face in sport. My sister Tracey is Head Coach for the England Netball team and in a Netball World Cup year, she'll have plenty of tough decisions to make this summer. COPA AMERICA - Today EcuadorvBolivia Ecuador8/15 Draw11/4 Bolivia6/1 EcuadorvBolivia Enner Valencia to Score and Ecuador to Win in 90 Mins9/4 Bet now But making tough decisions isn't new for Tracey. Throughout her career in sport, she's been faced with hard choices along the way. As we all know, most women's sport doesn't enjoy the same investment and support found in men's sport, and while I don’t think I've ever heard Tracey moan about the matter, I know it's provided her with challenges that didn't come my way. Tracey Neville: England Netball team head coach Tracey Neville: England Netball team head coach Being a professional athlete and now coaching at international level, we both know that the journey has been far more difficult for Tracey. She's had to juggle sport and education. She's had to juggle sport and a career. The profile of women's sport and interest from sponsors and the public hasn't always been there. Playing football was my career but for Tracey, it wasn't that simple. She's had to hold a job outside of sport to fund her journey as an elite netballer. Her incredible hard work, dedication and the sacrifices she's made has got her to where she is today.
